Evanston native and Clemson University lecturer Mary Barr tells the fascinating story behind her new book,  Friends Disappear: The Battle for Racial Equality in Evanston.To write it, Barr returned to her old neighborhood (Chapter 1 is titled "Heavenston") to track down classmates and piece together a history of Evanston  based on her group of friends growing up at the height of local civil rights activism. During her talk on Sunday, Dr. Barr will also discuss her current research on the 1965 North Shore Summer Project, a civil rights campaign that challenged discriminatory housing practices in Wilmette and Winnetka.

Note: Saturday's event at the Evanston Public Library is free and open to the public. Sunday's talk at the Wilmette Historical Museum, co-hosted with the Winnetka Historical Society, is free for members and $5 for non-members.
