Join James Bellanca and Arline Paul for an afternoon of talk about their book Becoming Self-Directed Learners: Student & Faculty Memoirs of an Experimenting High School 40 Years Later, co-edited with Mark Paul. Certainly of special significance to our community, it looks back on New Trier High School's 10-year-long Self-Directed Learning
program that began in 1972. Arline Paul was the sole faculty member who
taught in the Center from its alpha to its omega. For the book, more
than 35 graduates of the program, including Sen. Mark Kirk and actress Virginia Madsen, contributed autobiographical sketches about the effects of deeper learning on their careers and lives.
The Family Action Network (FAN) hosts two events with Dr. Temple Grandin, described as the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world (due in part to the Emmy-winning 2010 HBO docudrama based on her life).
Eustacia Cutler, who will take the floor first with a talk about raising Dr. Grandin. Molly Losh,
Ph.D., Principal Investigator of the Neurodevelopmental Disorders
Laboratory at Northwestern University will pose questions to both women
at the conclusion of their presentations.

We are hosting a "stealth" event with two debut authors: Donna Cooner, author of Skinny, and Sharon Cameron, author of The Dark Unwinding. This
intimate low-key gathering is a way to introduce Chicago northshore
bloggers, educators, and teens to two terrific books, with appetizers,
conversation, and maybe a bit of reading. It's part of our newish
