Summer Fun for Kids at The Book Stall

Our  Summer Kids Programming starts tomorrow, Thursday, June 19, at 4 pm, when we will Slow...Down...for...Sloths!  We'll read one of our fave new picture books,  Sparky!, the story of a girl who finds out that a pet sloth might not be as boring as you'd think. Recommended for ages 4-6. No registration necessary.

Next Wednesday, June 25, at 6:30 pm, it's time for another edition of our popular Sleepy Storytime, where kids wear their PJs, bring a favorite stuffed toy guest, and hear some great bedtime stories. Reading the stories this time is our own Mr. Robert, who'll also serve our patented Book Stall snack. Recommended for ages 3-5. No registration necessary.

Two Big Events for Kids and Teens

Saturday, May 31 at The Book Stall

In between Mother's Day and Father's Day, this Saturday could be declared Children's Day at The Book Stall. We're hosting two big events, which are:

11 am:  YA Summer Reads Kick-Off Party
Young adult (YA) fiction writers James Klise (The Art of Secrets) and Philip Siegel (The Break-Up Artist) will join us for our annual celebration of summer, the year's greatest season for reading! We'll have prizes, teens can chat with the authors about their work and how they get their ideas and inspiration for their books, and we'll have pizza at noon. This event is free, but we ask that you please register by calling the store at 847 446-8880.
3 pm: Middle Grade Mania
We welcome six amazing writers to this party for young readers ages 8-12. They are (from left to right as pictured below: Emily Fairlie (The Tuckernuck Mysteries), Kate Hannigan (Cupcake Cousins), Michele Weber Hurwitz (The Sumer I Saved the World in 65 Days), Wendy McClure (Wanderville), Liesl Shurtlieff (Rump: The True Story of Rumpelstiltskin), and Amy Timberlake (One Came Home).

Each will talk about their books, their work, and share how they develop and how they improve their stories. It's a fine kick-off for a summer of reading. Free. No registration required.

Making the Most of Summer's Bounty...

Making the Most of Summer's Bounty...

We're reaching that glorious time of the late summer when produce from the garden and local farmers' markets is at its peak.  Finding new ways to make good use of summer's bounty can be as easy as a trip to The Book Stall. A quick tour of our cookbook section by staffers Nancy Randall and Kathy Riley yielded these appetizing new titles:

Foraged Flavor: Finding Fabulous Ingredients in Your Backyard or Farmer's Market, with 88 Recipes by Tama Matsuoka Wong with Eddy Leroux, with a foreword by Daniel Boulud. A field guide by for cooking enthusiasts by the forager for Daniel Boulud's flagship restaurant and its chef de cuisine.

The Old Farmer's Almanac Garden-Fresh Cookbook. Words of wisdom for growing, harvesting, preparing, and storing vegetables, fruit, and herbs as well as choosing the very best ingredients from the marketplace.

Farmers' Markets of the Heartland by Janine MacLachlan. A tour of seasonal markets and farm stands throughout the Midwest and a sampling of local flavors from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.

Ripe: A Cook in the Orchard by Nigel Slater. From Britain's foremost food writer, a gorgeous new volume dedicated to fruit. It's equal parts cookbook, primer on produce and gardening, and affectionate ode to the inspiration behind the book -- Slater's 40-foot backyard garden in London.

Farmers' Markets of the HeartlandPlenty: Good, Uncomplicated Food for the Sustainable Kitchen by Diana Henry. A revival of the lost art of home economics: making the most of what we have without depleting bank accounts and the planet's resources.

The Farm: Rustic Recipes for a Year of Incredible Food by Ian Knauer. Fresh, modern spins on classics that help you make the most of your market or garden.

The Pickled Pantry: From Apples to Zucchini, 150 Recipes for Pickles, Relishes, Chutneys and More by Andrea Chesman. Fresh, contemporary, low-fuss recipes for pickling everything from apples to zucchini.
