Evanston author Sam Reaves signs Mob Cop: My Life of Crime in the Chicago Police Department, the book he wrote with and about Fred Pascente, a Chicago police officer for 26 years who had close ties to the Mafia. Pascente's story details the decline of traditional organized crime in the United States and reveals information about the inner workings of the Chicago Outfit that has never before been publicly released.

Printers Row Lit Fest

We're are near the weekend of Chicago's premiere literary event, the Chicago Tribune's Printers Row Lit Fest, Saturday and Sunday, June 6 and 7. It is the Midwest's largest gathering of book lovers with more than 200 authors and presenters in tents, stages, exhibits and indoor events stretching throughout the historic Printers Row neighborhood in the South Loop. Click here for a preview in the Trib and here for the Lit Fest's website.

luncheon at The Union League Club on Friday, June 5, from 11 am - 2 pm. Kick-Off attendees will meet and mingle with a number of the authors participating in the Lit Fest. It's the surprising story of his life as a Chicago newspaperman whose disability and seven years in the Franciscan Order of monks ultimately led him to create new waves in journalism. At two events, one downtown and the other in Winnetka, Chicago historian Sally Kalmbach speaks about her book Mrs. Thorne's World of Miniatures. It's the story of the woman who gained worldwide recognition for the hundreds of miniature rooms she created with such exacting detail that they became educational tools for students of architecture and interior design. The 68 of them that she left to the Art Institute of Chicago have delighted generations of visitors.

Chicagoans of the Year in Literature

The Book Stall is grateful and proud to be among a group of local independent booksellers named by the Chicago Tribune as Chicagoans of the Year in Literature in 2014. 

The honor usually goes to an individual author, and the Tribune noted that some of the country's best and most successful works in fiction, nonfiction, and children's literature in 2014 came from Chicago writers. "But would there even be a book community in Chicago to talk about without, you know, local booksellers?" asked the Trib's Christopher Borelli.  He continued: "...a number of local women have stepped up recently and either started new bookstores in the Chicago area or became the next-gen owners of beloved neighborhood institutions."

The Book Stall is pleased to be part of the 2014 Printers Row Lit Fest Kick-off Reception and Luncheon at The Union League Club on Friday, June 6. We'll be celebrating Lit Fest's 30th anniversary at this special event hosted by Chicago Tribune writer Rick Kogan. 

  

Guests can enjoy exclusive access to 30 established and rising stars of the literary world beginning at 11 am (registration opens at 10:30 am), with authors and book lovers mingling to discuss their books. Authors will join attendees at their tables for lunch, at 12 noon, with a program to follow.
